Scientists have warned that consumption of antibiotics has escalated since 2000 and uncontrollable superbugs (bacteria) pose a global threat by adopting resistance to antibiotic drugs.
A study by National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) shows an increase of 65% in the consumption of antibiotics from the year 2000 to 2015, in Pakistan. The findings were based on sales data of 76 countries with low and middle-income.
Study of period of 16-years concludes that United States, France and Italy are highest consumers of antibiotics.
Over years, India has doubled its consumption whereas in China it has increased by 79%. In Pakistan, antibiotics consumption has increased by 65%. The three countries are the biggest consumers of antibiotics.
The research team was led by scientists from Johns Hopkins University located at Baltimore. In Washington, the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics and Policy suggested that countries need to invest in alternative treatment methodology, sanitation and vaccination. “With antibiotic consumption increasing worldwide, the challenge posed by antibiotic resistance is likely to get worse,” the researchers said.
